Timetable of activities

Week 1. Introductions and web basics

  • Lecture (1 hour). Introduction to the unit. Keeping safe online.
  • Tutorial (2 hours). Introductions and expectations; Basic skills needed for appropriate level of proficiency; Keeping safe online. Start setting up your research journal; Dealing with tags, widgets, embed code, and links.
  • Online structured learning activity (2 hours). Research journal: Build your research journal. Pay attention to tags, titles, navigability.

Week 2. The role of ICT in teaching and learning; pedagogy and educational design

  • Lecture (1 hour). What about technology? What we’re doing online: ICT and contemporary society; ICT and education.
  • Tutorial (2 hours). Discussion of resources and reading; Overview of wikis, blogs and RSS.
  • Online lecture (1 hour). Principles of effective integration; TPACK; Online considerations; Educational design.
  • Online structured learning activity (1 hour). Research journal: Explore, analyse and write up RSS feeds and feed readers.

Week 3. New media literacy and new forms of knowledge

  • Lecture (1 hour). Old practices and new learning; ICT literacy definitions and standards; Literacy and human flourishing; Classroom praxis.
  • Tutorial (2 hours). Discussion of resources and reading; Finding and evaluating on-line resources; Social bookmarking tools; Brainstorming and mapping tools.
  • Online lecture (1 hour). Teaching with blogs.
  • Online structured learning activity (2 hours). Research journal: Explore, analyse and write up ICT showcases.

Week 4. New ways of learning: Participatory cultures

  • Lecture (1 hour): Old and new learning; Participatory culture; Re-thinking literacy; Skills for the 21st century.
  • Tutorial (2 hours): Discussion of reading and resources. Social networking; Animation.
  • Online lecture (1 hour). Teaching with wikis.
  • Online structured learning activity (2 hour). Research journal: Explore, analyse and write-up Learning Management Systems (LMSs)

Week 5. Digital divide and inclusive practice

  • Lecture (1 hour): Digital divide and inclusive practice.
  • Tutorial (2 hours): Matching student needs; Teaching and learning modalities; Podcasting; Mobile learning.
  • Online lecture (1 hour). Teaching with social networks.
  • Online structured learning activity (2 hours). Research journal: Explore, analyse and write up rich media, e.g., video sharing, podcasting, mashups, and/or Photosharing tools

Week 6. Cybersafety

  • Lecture (1 hour): Guest speaker Melanie Dancer, via Skype.
  • Tutorial (2 hours): Discussion of resources and reading; Interactive White Boards (IWBs); Research Management tools; Clippings; Scribd; Slideshare.
  • Online lecture (1 hour). Traditional vs cyber-bullying; Identifying cyberbullying and responding to cyberbullying; Cybersafe practices.
  • Online structured learning activity (2 hours). Research journal: Explore, analyse and write up rich media: videos, podcasts, and/or mash-ups

Week 7. Managing risk online

  • Lecture (1 hour): Risk analysis and management; using external services; Creative Commons; Copyright; Intellectual property
  • Tutorial (2 hours): Discussion of resources and reading; Discussion forums; Online polls.
  • Online structured learning activity A (2 hours). Research journal: Explore, analyse and write up games, and/or virtual worlds.
