Plagiarism

Plagiarism is using others’ work without appropriate acknowledgement. Plagiarism includes

  • Copying paragraphs or parts of sentences without quote marks and page numbers. Even if the source is acknowledged, it is still plagiarism unless you add quote marks and page numbers.
  • Paraphrasing or using ideas without acknowledgement.

Note that I will report you if I suspect you have plagiarised your work. Even if you have not meant to plagiarise, you can still be investigated and reported for academic misconduct.

Other forms of academic misconduct

Other forms of misconduct may include

  • Falsifying data
  • Submitting an assignment you have previously submitted
  • Helping someone else commit an act of misconduct

Misconduct procedures

  • Unit convenor makes a judgement as to whether or not misconduct has occurred.
  • Convenor submits a report to Associate Dean (Education) who conducts a Summary Inquiry.
  • There may be a Committee Inquiry for more serious offences.
  • If misconduct has occurred your name will be placed on the Student Academic Misconduct Register. You will also at least receive a fail grade on your assignment (which may mean you will fail the entire unit). Even if you didn’t mean to plagiarise, you will still be subject to these procedures.
  • If the case is deemed more serious, you may be expelled from the University.
  • There is, of course, an appeals process.
